The Two Trees – The Beginning – Part 1

Today we begin a series focusing on the two trees God placed in the Garden of Eden; the Tree of Life and the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil.    We will look at the significance of why God placed the two trees in the garden giving man the option to choose from them.  We will explore the consequences of man’s choice with the two trees, and how it affects us today.

Genesis 2: 8, 9, 15-17:   8 The LORD God planted a garden toward the east, in Eden; and there He placed the man whom He had formed. 9 Out of the ground the LORD God caused to grow every tree that is pleasing to the sight and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.  15 Then the LORD God took the man and put him into the Garden of Eden to cultivate it and keep it. 16 The LORD God commanded the man, saying, “From any tree of the garden you may eat freely; 17 but from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat from it you will surely die.”  NAS

Genesis 3: 1-7:  1 Now the serpent was more crafty than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said to the woman, “Indeed, has God said, ‘You shall not eat from any tree of the garden’?” 2 The woman said to the serpent, “From the fruit of the trees of the garden we may eat; 3 but from the fruit of the tree which is in the middle of the garden, God has said, ‘You shall not eat from it or touch it, or you will die.’” 4 The serpent said to the woman, “You surely will not die! 5 “For God knows that in the day you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” 6 When the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was desirable to make one wise, she took from its fruit and ate; and she gave also to her husband with her, and he ate. 7 Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loin coverings.   NAS

Genesis 3: 8-13:   8 They heard the sound of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God among the trees of the garden. 9 Then the LORD God called to the man, and said to him, “Where are you?” 10 He said, “I heard the sound of You in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid myself.” 11 And He said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree of which I commanded you not to eat?” 12 The man said, “The woman whom You gave to be with me, she gave me from the tree, and I ate.” 13 Then the LORD God said to the woman, “What is this you have done?” And the woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.”   NAS

Genesis 3: 14,15:  14 The LORD God said to the serpent,  “Because you have done this, Cursed are you more than all cattle,  And more than every beast of the field; On your belly you will go,  And dust you will eat, All the days of your life;  15 And I will put enmity,  Between you and the woman, And between your seed and her seed;  He shall bruise you on the head, And you shall bruise him on the heel.”   NAS

Genesis 3:16:  To the woman He said, “I will greatly multiply Your pain in childbirth, In pain you will bring forth children;  Yet your desire will be for your husband, And he will rule over you.”   NAS

Genesis 3: 17-19:   17 Then to Adam He said, “Because you have listened to the voice of your wife, and have eaten from the tree about which I commanded you, saying, ‘You shall not eat from it’; Cursed is the ground because of you; In toil you will eat of it All the days of your life. 18Both thorns and thistles it shall grow for you;  And you will eat the plants of the field;  19 By the sweat of your face  You will eat bread, Till you return to the groundBecause from it you were taken; For you are dust, And to dust you shall return.”    NAS

Genesis 3: 22-24b: 22 Then the LORD God said, “Behold, the man has become like one of Us, knowing good and evil; and now, he might stretch out his hand, and take also from the tree of life, and eat, and live forever”— 23 therefore the LORD God sent him out from the garden of Eden, to cultivate the ground from which he was taken. 24 …at the east of the garden of Eden He stationed the cherubim and the flaming sword which turned every direction to guard the way to the tree of lifeNAS

Genesis 4: 1a-7: 1a And Adam had relations with his wife Eve, and she conceived and gave birth to Cain. 2 Later she gave birth to Cain’s brother Abel.  Now Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the soil. 3 So in the course of time, Cain brought some of the fruit of the soil as an offering to the LORD, 4 while Abel brought the best portions of the firstborn of his flock.  And the LORD looked with favor on Abel and his offering, 5 but He had no regard for Cain and his offering. So Cain became very angry, and his countenance fell.  6 “Why are you angry,” said the LORD to Cain, “and why is your face downcast? 7 If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you refuse to do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; you are its object of desire, but you must master it.”   Berean

Genesis 4: 8-12:   8 Then Cain said to his brother Abel, “Let us go out to the field.” And while they were in the field, Cain rose up against his brother Abel and killed him. 9 And the LORD said to Cain, “Where is your brother Abel?”  “I do not know!” he answered. “Am I my brother’s keeper?”  10 “What have you done?” replied the LORD. “The voice of your brother’s blood cries out to Me from the ground. 11 Now you are cursed and banished from the ground, which has opened its mouth to receive your brother’s blood from your hand. 12 When you till the ground, it will no longer yield its produce to you. You will be a fugitive and a wanderer on the earth.”   Berean

Genesis 4: 13-1613 But Cain said to the LORD, “My punishment is greater than I can bear. 14 Behold, this day You have driven me from the face of the earth, and from Your face I will be hidden; I will be a fugitive and a wanderer on the earth, and whoever finds me will kill me.”  15 “Not so!” replied the LORD. “If anyone slays Cain, then Cain will be avenged sevenfold.” And the LORD placed a mark on Cain, so that no one who found him would kill him.  16 So Cain went out from the presence of the LORD and settled in the land of Nod, east of Eden.   Berean

Genesis 4: 17a, 18, 19, 23:    17 And Cain had relations with his wife, and she conceived and gave birth to Enoch. 18 Now to Enoch was born Irad, and Irad was the father of Mehujael, and Mehujael was the father of Methusael, and Methusael was the father of Lamech. 19 And Lamech married two women, one named Adah and the other Zillah.  23 Then Lamech said to his wives:  “Adah and Zillah, hear my voice; wives of Lamech, listen to my speech. For I have slain a man for wounding me,  a young man for striking me. 24 If Cain is avenged sevenfold, then Lamech seventy-sevenfold.”   Berean

Genesis 4: 25, 26:  25 And Adam again had relations with his wife, and she gave birth to a son and named him Seth, saying, “God has granted me another seed in place of Abel, since Cain killed him.”  26 And to Seth also a son was born, and he called him Enosh.  At that time men began to call upon the name of the LORD.   Berean
