The Holy Spirit

Who or what is the Holy Spirit? And what is His purpose? We worship one God in trinity and the Trinity in unity, not confusing the persons nor dividing the divine being. For the Father is one person, the Son is another, and the Spirit is still another. But the deity of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are one; equal in glory, co-eternal in majesty. And in this Trinity, no one is before or after, greater or less than the other; but all three persons are in themselves, co-equal; and so, we must worship the Trinity in unity and the one God in three persons.

John 4:24 God is a Spirit: and they that worship Him must worship Him in spirit and in truth.

2 Corinthians 3:17 Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.

John 17:20-23 Jesus said, “I do not pray for these alone, but also for those who will believe in Me through their word; 21 that they all may be one, as You, Father, are in Me, and I in You; that they also may be one in Us, that the world may believe that You sent Me. 22 And the glory which You gave Me I have given themthat they may be one just as We are one23 I in them, and You in Me; that they may be made perfect in one, and that the world may know that You have sent Me, and have loved them as You have loved Me.”

The Holy Spirit was at creation with God the Father and Jesus.

Genesis 1:2 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 2 The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.

Colossians 1:15-20 He (Jesus) is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. 16 For by Him (Jesus) all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him17 And He is before all things, and in Him all things consist. 18 And He is the head of the body, the church, who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in all things He may have the preeminence.

19 For it pleased the Father that in Him all the fullness should dwell, 20 and by Him to reconcile all things to Himself, by Him, whether things on earth or things in heaven, having made peace through the blood of His cross.

What is the role of the Holy Spirit?

John 14:26 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.

John 15:26 When the Advocate comes, whom I will send to you from the Father—the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the FatherHe will testify about Me.

John 16:7-15 Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send Him to you. 8 And when He has come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: 9 of sin, because they do not believe in Me; 10 of righteousness, because I go to My Father and you see Me no more; 11 of judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged.

12 I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. 13 However, when Hethe Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come. 14 He will glorify Me, for He will take of what is Mine and declare it to you. 15 All things that the Father has are Mine. Therefore, I said that He will take of Mine and declare it to you.

The Holy Spirit is the seal of our promised inheritance.

Ephesians 1:13-14 In Him (Christ) you also trusted, after you heard the Word of truth, the gospel of your salvation; in whom also, having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise14 who is the guarantee of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, to the praise of His glory.

The Holy Spirit can be grieved.

Ephesians 4:25:29-32 Therefore, putting away lying, “Let each one of you speak truth with his neighbor,” for we are members of one another.  29 Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification, that it may impart grace to the hearers. 30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. 31 Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, clamor, and evil speaking be put away from you, along with all malice. 32 And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you. (resentment, rage, violence, screaming, hatred)

The Word of God gives us a list of things that grieve the Holy Spirit. It should grieve us too. Harmony with fellow believers is necessary for harmony with God.
