How God Teaches Us

Many think God teaches through strict and harsh discipline, but is this true? How does God teach us? Do we blame God for our own mistakes? Find out here.

When we think about discipline, correction, or chastening, our minds come up with all kinds of strict, harsh, and abusive behavior. We often give those same attributes to our Heavenly Father whenever something happens to us we don’t like. When a tragedy or sickness hits us, people say, “Well, God is trying to teach me a lesson!” We tend to blame God for our own mistakes. It’s in fallen man’s DNA. Look at Adam’s response to God when questioned about his own actions.  Is this you?

Genesis 3:1-12 Now the serpent was more cunning than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made. And he said to the woman, “Has God indeed said, ‘You shall not eat of every tree of the garden’?”

2 And the woman said to the serpent, “We may eat the fruit of the trees of the garden; 3 but of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God has said, ‘You shall not eat it, nor shall you touch it, lest you die.’”

4 Then the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die5 For God knows that in the day you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”

6 So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree desirable to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate. She also gave to her husband with her, and he ate7 Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves coverings.

8 And they heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden.

9 Then the Lord God called to Adam and said to him, “Where are you?” 10 So he said, “I heard Your voice in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; and I hid myself.” 11 And He said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree of which I commanded you that you should not eat?

12 Then the man said, “The woman whom You gave to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I ate.”

God does not use sickness, tragedy, or sick His dogs on us to teach us. He uses His Word to teach and train us.

2 Timothy 3:16 All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness,

Hebrews 12:5b-11 My son, do not despise the chastening of the Lord, nor be discouraged when you are rebuked by Him; 6 For whom the Lord loves He chastens, and scourges every son whom He receives. 7 If you endure chastening, God deals with you as with sons; for what son is there whom a father does not chasten? 8 But if you are without chastening, of which all have become partakers, then you are illegitimate and not sons. 9 Furthermore, we have had human fathers who corrected us, and we paid them respect. Shall we not much more readily be in subjection to the Father of spirits and live? 10 For they indeed for a few days chastened us as seemed best to them, but He for our profit, that we may be partakers of His holiness11 Now no chastening seems to be joyful for the present, but painful; nevertheless, afterward it yields the peaceable fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it. (chasten = discipline; scourges = spanks)

Our Heavenly Father treats us better than our earthly fathers. He doesn’t withhold things from us as punishment, but as protection. (Example of a hot stove)

Proverbs 4:1-13 Hear, my children, the instruction of a father, and give attention to know understanding; 2 For I give you good doctrine: Do not forsake my law.
3 When I was my father’s son, tender and the only one in the sight of my mother, 4 He also taught me, and said

to me:

“Let your heart retain my words; keep my commands, and live. 5 Get wisdom! Get understanding! Do not forget, nor turn away from the words of my mouth. 6 Do not forsake her, and she will preserve you; love her, and she will keep you. 7 Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore, get wisdom. And in all your getting, get understanding. 8 Exalt her, and she will promote you; she will bring you honor, when you embrace her. 9 She will place on your head an ornament of grace; a crown of glory she will deliver to you.”

10 Hear, my son, and receive my sayings, and the years of your life will be many. 11 I have taught you in the way of wisdom; I have led you in right paths. 12 When you walk, your steps will not be hindered, and when you run, you will not stumble. 13 Take firm hold of instruction, do not let go; keep her, for she is your life.

When we don’t follow His Word, we do suffer. Not because God gets His jollies from punishing us, but because we reap the consequences of our actions.

Galatians 6:7-8 Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap8 For he who sows to his flesh will of the flesh reap corruption, but he who sows to the Spirit will of the Spirit reap everlasting life.

Yes, we should learn from our mistakes. But if we would learn from the Word of God, it would keep us from making those mistakes in the first place. Learn His Word today.
