Power of Prayer – The Power to Believe – Pt. 5

We have been teaching on the power of prayer.  How to have effective prayer and get our prayers answered.  In order to do that, we have learned we must get our hearts right.  We know our hearts constitute our mind, will and emotions.  Our heart is the working center of our entire being.  It controls what we think, what we believe, and how we respond.  Today, we are going to look at how to develop the ability to believe.

Matthew 28: 16-2016 Then the eleven disciples went away into Galilee, to the mountain which Jesus had appointed for them. 17 When they saw Him, they worshiped Him; but some doubted. 18 And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.    NKJ

Luke 10: 17-20:   1 After this, the Lord appointed seventy-two others and sent them two by two ahead of Him to every town and place He was about to visit. 17 The seventy-two returned with joy and said, “Lord, even the demons submit to us in Your name.18 So He said to them, “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven. 19 See, I have given you authority to tread on snakes and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy. Nothing will harm you. 20 Nevertheless, do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.”  Berean   authority-exousia-delegated superhuman power and jurisdiction

Colossians 2: 6-15:  6 Therefore, just as you have received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to walk in Him, 7 rooted and built up in Him, established in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness. 8 See to it that no one takes you captive through philosophy and empty deception, which are based on human tradition and the spiritual forces of the world rather than on Christ. 9 For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity dwells in bodily form. 10 And you have been made complete in Christ, who is the head over every ruler and authority. 11 In Him you were also circumcised, in the putting off of your sinful nature, with the circumcision performed by Christ and not by human hands. 12 And having been buried with Him in baptism, you were raised with Him through your faith in the power of God, who raised Him from the dead.  13 When you were dead in your trespasses and in the uncircumcision of your sinful nature, God made you alive with Christ. He forgave us all our trespasses, 14 having canceled the debt ascribed to us in the decrees that stood against us. He took it away, nailing it to the cross! 15 And having disarmed the powers and authorities, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross.    Berean Study  philosophy-philosophia-fond of wise things -> educated intellects

But he did not go. 31 Which of the two did the will of his father?”  “The first,” they answered. Jesus said to them, “Truly I tell you, the tax collectors and prostitutes are entering the kingdom of God before you. 32 For John came to you in a righteous way and you did not believe him, but the tax collectors and prostitutes did. 20-25:   20 As they were walking back in the morning, they saw the fig tree withered from its roots. 21 Peter remembered it and said, “Look, Rabbi! The fig tree You cursed has withered.” 22Have faith in God,” Jesus said to them. 23 “Truly I tell you that if anyone says to this mountain, ‘Be lifted up and thrown into the sea,’ and has no doubt in his heart but believes that it will happen, it will be done for him. 24 Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.  25 And when you stand to pray, if you hold anything against another, forgive it, so that your Father in heaven will forgive your trespasses as well.”  Berean Study mountain-oros-rise or rear above truth

Power of Prayer – The Deceitful Heart – Part 4

We have been teaching on having effective prayer.  A prayer is only as effective as our hearts are toward God and others.  Often our thoughts and attitudes have taken on a life of their own inside our mental world.  We train ourselves to believe our own self-centered ways.  Prayer should always begin with an evaluation of self.  How we think toward and treat others is directly proportionate to how God responds to us.

Jeremiah 17: 5-10:   5Cursed is the man who trusts in mankind, who makes the flesh his strength and turns his heart from the LORD.  6 He will be like a shrub in the desert; he will not see when prosperity comes.  He will dwell in the parched places of the desert, in a salt land where no one lives.  7 But blessed is the man who trusts in the LORD, whose confidence is Him8 He will be like a tree planted by the waters that sends out its roots toward the stream.  It does not fear when the heat comes, and its leaves are always green.  It will not worry in a year of drought or cease to produce fruit.  9 The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure—who can understand it?  10 I, the LORD, search the heart; examine the mind to reward a man according to his way, by what his deeds deserve.  Berean heart-leb- feelings, will, mind (intellect)

Power of Prayer – How to Know God Hears – Part 3

As we continue our study into effective prayer, we have to peel the onions of our souls to find those beliefs, attitudes and thoughts that block our prayers.  In order to get our prayers answered, we must be sure God is hearing us.  How do we know God hears us?  The Word tells us how God hears us.

1 John 5: 1-41 Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God, and everyone who loves the Father also loves the one born of Him *(the Father). 2 By this we know that we love the children of God: when we love God and keep His commandments. 3 For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments. And His commandments are not burdensome, Berean     *emphasis added   keep-tereo-to guard from loss; keep an eye upon; hold fast to; note a prophecy and fulfill it

1 Thessalonians 2:12, 13 12 We encouraged you and comforted you as we urged you to walk in a manner worthy of God, who calls you into His own kingdom and glory.  13 And we continually thank God that in receiving the word of God from us, you did not accept it as the word of men, but as the true word of God—the word now at work in you who believe. Berean

2 Peter 1:16-21:   16 For we did not follow cunningly devised fables when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but were eyewitnesses of His majesty. 17 For He *(Jesus) received from God the Father honor and glory when such a voice came to Him from the Excellent Glory: “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.” 18 And we heard this voice which came from heaven when we were with Him on the holy mountain.  19 And so we have the prophetic word confirmed, which you do well to heed as a light that shines in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts; 20 knowing this first, that no prophecy of Scripture is of any private interpretation, 21 for prophecy never came by the will of man, but holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit.  NKJ

Hebrews 11:6:  And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.  NIV

Romans 10: 16, 1716 But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Isaiah says, “Lord, who has believed our report?” 17 So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of GodNKJ

2 Corinthians 1: 20:  For all the promises of God are “Yes” in Christ.  And so through Him, our “Amen” is spoken to the glory of God.  Berean

1 John 5: 14, 15:    14 And this is the confidence that we have before Him: If we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. 15 And if we know that He hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we already possess what we have asked of Him.   Berean

1 John 4: 7, 10, 11:  7 Beloved, let us love one another, because love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. 8 Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love.  10 And love consists in this: not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins11 Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. Berean

Romans 12: 1, 2:  1 Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. 2 Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.  NIV

Romans 12: 9-21:   9 Let love be without hypocrisy. Abhor what is evil; cling to what is good. 10 Be devoted to one another in brotherly love; give preference to one another in honor; 11 not lagging behind in diligence, fervent in spirit, serving the Lord; 12 rejoicing in hope, persevering in tribulation, devoted to prayer,  13 contributing to the needs of the saints, practicing hospitality. 14 Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse. 15 Rejoice with those who rejoice, and weep with those who weep. 16 Be of the same mind toward one another; do not be haughty in mind, but associate with the lowly. Do not be wise in your own estimation. 17 Never pay back evil for evil to anyone. Respect what is right in the sight of all men. 18 If possible, so far as it depends on you, be at peace with all men. 19 Never take your own revenge, beloved, but leave room for the wrath of God, for it is written, “VENGEANCE IS MINE, I WILL REPAY,” says the Lord. 20 “BUT IF YOUR ENEMY IS HUNGRY, FEED HIM, AND IF HE IS THIRSTY, GIVE HIM A DRINK; FOR IN SO DOING YOU WILL HEAP BURNING COALS ON HIS HEAD.” 21 Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.   NAS

1 Peter 3: 1,2,7:  1 Wives, in the same way, submit yourselves to your husbands, so that even if they refuse to believe the word, they will be won over without words by the behavior of their wives 2 when they see your pure and reverent demeanor. 7 Husbands, in the same way, treat your wives with consideration as a delicate vessel, and with honor as fellow heirs of the gracious gift of life, so that your prayers will not be hindered.   Berean

1 Peter 3: 8-12 8 Finally, all of you, be like-minded and sympathetic, love as brothers, be tender-hearted and humble. 9 Do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult, but with blessing, because to this you were called so that you may inherit a blessing. 10 For, “Whoever would love life and see good days must keep his tongue from evil and his lips from deceitful speech11 He must turn from evil and do good; he must seek peace and pursue it12 For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, and His ears are inclined to their prayer.  But the face of the Lord is against those who do evil.”   Berean

Power of Prayer – Character – Part 2

As we continue our study into effective prayer, we will look at the necessary character a believer must maintain in order for prayer to work.

1 Timothy 2: 1-6, 8:   Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men, 2 for kings and all who are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence. 3 For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, 4 who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. 5 For there is one God and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus, 6 who gave Himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time, 8 I desire therefore that the men pray everywhere, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and doubting;  NKJ

supplications – deesis – root -> to beg or bind oneself with a request; asking or begging earnestly and humbly for something or someone
prayer- proseuche- an oratory; chapel of private worship facing God.  We are the temple of the living God, so we are the chapel of private worship, and we face God when we pray.
intercession– an intermediate between;  action of intervening on behalf of another whether for or against; an interview.
giving of thanks – give (dosis)- gifting something; thanks- (eucharistia)- grateful language to God as an act of worship. Gifting grateful language to God as an act of worship.

James 1:6-8:   6 But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind. 7 For that person must not suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; 8 he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways. ESV

Acts 1:14; 2: 1:  1  And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. 14 These all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication, with the women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brethren. KJ

Acts 8: 5-8:   5 Then Philip went down to the city of Samaria, and preached Christ unto them. 6 And the people with one accord gave heed unto those things which Philip spake, hearing and seeing the miracles which he did. 7 For unclean spirits, crying with loud voice, came out of many that were possessed with them: and many taken with palsies, and that were lame, were healed. 8 And there was great joy in that city.  KJ

Luke 11: 12, 14, 15:   12 And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.  14 For if you forgive men their trespasses, your Heavenly Father will also forgive you. 15 But if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive yoursBerean  debt-opheilema-idea of something owed, under obligation; a fault; something due that is accruing

1 John 4: 18-2118 There is no fear in love, but perfect love drives out fear, because fear involves punishment. The one who fears has not been perfected in love. 19 We love because He first loved us.  20 If anyone says, “I love God,” but hates his brother, he is a liar. My door is already shut and my children are with me in bed. I cannot get up to give you anything.’ 8 I tell you, even though he will not get up to provide for him because of his friendship, yet because of the man’s persistence, he will get up and give him as much as he needs. 9 So I tell you: Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. 10 For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened11 What father among you, if his son asks for a fish, will give him a snake instead? 12 Or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? 13 So if you who are evil know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!”   Berean

Power of Prayer-Setting the Tone-Pt. 1

Today we’re going to begin a study on prayer.  Prayer is spoken of by believers often, yet do we really understand the significance of it; the value behind its potential?  Do we understand the power a believing heart has before God; power to change our situations, live quiet and peaceable lives, be whole and healed, and make a difference for others?  Today we are going to set the tone for prayer.  We are going to open our spiritual eyes, change our attitudes and become effective prayer warriors for Christ and His kingdom.

Matthew 6: 5-85 And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites. For they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by men. Truly I tell you, they already have their full reward. 6 But when you pray, go into your inner room, shut your door, and pray to your Father, who is unseen. And your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. 7 And when you pray, do not babble on like pagans, for they think that by their many words they will be heard. 8 Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask Him.  Berean

Luke 11: 1b, 2:  1 …“Lord, teach us to pray just as John also taught his disciples.”  2 And He said to them, “When you pray, say:  ‘Father, hallowed be Your name.  Your kingdom come. NAS

Matthew 6: 9, 10:   9 “Pray, then, in this way:  ‘Our Father who is in heaven, Hallowed be Your name.  10 ‘Your kingdom come.            Your will be done, On earth as it is in heaven.    NAS

Psalm 95:2:   Let us come into his presence with thanksgiving; let us make a joyful noise to him with songs of praise!  ESV

When we come to God for prayer, start out praising Him.  Thank Him for many things, as you begin to thank Him for what He’s done in your life, you will begin to repent.  Find places your attitude is wrong, you’ve complained, haven’t forgiven, lost patience, doubted, were discontent. Once you do this, then state, “Lord, cause Your will to be done in my life.  What do You need me to do for You today.”

Matthew 6: 25-33:   25 “For this reason I say to you, do not be worried about your life, as to what you will eat or what you will drink; nor for your body, as to what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? 26 “Look at the birds of the air, that they do not sow, nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not worth much more than they? 27 “And who of you by being worried can add a single hour to his life? 28 “And why are you worried about clothing? Observe how the lilies of the field grow; they do not toil nor do they spin, 29 yet I say to you that not even Solomon in all his glory clothed himself like one of these. 30 “But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which is alive today and tomorrow is thrown into the furnace, will He not much more clothe you? You of little faith! 31 “Do not worry then, saying, ‘What will we eat?’ or ‘What will we drink?’ or ‘What will we wear for clothing?’ 32 “For the Gentiles eagerly seek all these things; for your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. 33But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.   NAS

Luke 6: 38:  Give, and you will receive. Your gift will return to you in full—pressed down, shaken together to make room for more, running over, and poured into your lap. The amount you give will determine the amount you get back.”  NLT

Matthew 6: 13, 14:   14 “For if you forgive others for their transgressions, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. 15 “But if you do not forgive others, then your Father will not forgive your transgressions.
