What is Passover and how does it relate to me?

Passover is a celebration of the event that prepared the Children of Israel for leaving Egypt.

Exodus 12:5-13 ‘Your lamb shall be an unblemished male a year old; you may take it from the sheep or from the goats.

6 ‘And you shall keep it until the fourteenth day of the same month, then the whole assembly of the congregation of Israel is to kill it at sunset.

7 ‘Moreover, they shall take some of the blood and put it on the two doorposts and on the lintel of the houses in which they eat it.

8 ‘And they shall eat the flesh that same night, roasted with fire, and they shall eat it with unleavened bread and bitter herbs.

9 ‘Do not eat any of it raw or boiled at all with water, but rather roasted with fire, both its head and its legs along with its entrails.

10 ‘And you shall not leave any of it over until morning, but whatever is left of it until morning, you shall burn with fire.

11 ‘Now you shall eat it in this manner: with your loins girded, your sandals on your feet, and your staff in your hand; and you shall eat it in haste—it is the LORD’S Passover.

12 ‘For I will go through the land of Egypt on that night, and will strike down all the first-born in the land of Egypt, both man and beast; and against all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgments—I am the LORD.

13 ‘And the blood shall be a sign for you on the houses where you live; and when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and no plague will befall you to destroy you when I strike the land of Egypt. (NKJ)

Why Passover is important to me.

Hebrews 9:14-15 How much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without blemish to God, cleanse your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?

15 And for this reason He is the mediator of a new covenant, in order that since a death has taken place for the redemption of the transgressions that were committed under the first covenant, those who have been called may receive the promise of the eternal inheritance. (NKJ)

Notice the blood was placed on the lintel and doorpost and not on the threshold. The blood was never to be trampler under foot.

Hebrews 10:28-29 Anyone who has rejected Moses’ law dies without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses. 

29 Of how much worse punishment, do you suppose, will he be thought worthy who has trampled the Son of God underfoot, counted the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified a common thing, and insulted the Spirit of grace? (NKJ)

Look at the terminology in Exodus 12:7. What is the purpose of a door and how does it function?

John 10:1-7 Jesus said, “Truly, truly, I say to you, he who does not enter by the door into the fold of the sheep, but climbs up some other way, he is a thief and a robber. 2 “But he who enters by the door is a shepherd of the sheep. 3 “To him the doorkeeper opens, and the sheep hear his voice, and he calls his own sheep by name, and leads them out. 4 “When he puts forth all his own, he goes before them, and the sheep follow him because they know his voice. 5 “And a stranger they simply will not follow, but will flee from him, because they do not know the voice of strangers.” 6 This figure of speech Jesus spoke to them, but they did not understand what those things were which He had been saying to them. 7 Jesus therefore said to them again, “Truly, truly, I say to you, I am the door of the sheep. (NKJ)

Passover is the cure for my sin. I can make a choice to be free from my sin rather than to be enslaved by my sin.

Romans 6:6;10 We know that our old (unrenewed) self was nailed to the cross with Him in order that [our] body [which is the instrument] of sin might be made ineffective and inactive for evil, that we might no longer be the slaves of sin. 10 For by the death He died, He died to sin [ending our relation to it] once for all; and the life that He lives, He is living to God [in unbroken fellowship with Him.] (AMP)

Jesus – my Passover Lamb. Because of Him the wages of my sin (past, present, and future) pass over me without punishment. He bore the penalty in my place.
