Your Jewish Roots as a Christian – Marriage Supper – Pt. 4

Recap: Too often we try to understand the Bible from our Western-mindset. We have a poor understanding of Jewish customs and feasts. Yet, they are significantly linked to Jesus and His return. Jesus is the groom and we are the bride of Christ. The Marriage supper represents the Feast of Tabernacles.  What does that mean to Christians?

The Engagement

The betrothal begins with a commitment and a payment of the bride-price. At that point, the bride is already deemed married and it requires a bill of divorcement to nullify the marriage. If the bride has ANY contact with any other man, she is considered to be a harlot.

2 Corinthians 11:2 Paul said, “For I am jealous for you with godly jealousy. For I have betrothed you to one husband, that I may present you as a chaste virgin to Christ.”

1 Corinthians 6:15-20 Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ? Shall I then take the members of Christ and make them members of a harlot? Certainly not! 16 Or do you not know that he who is joined to a harlot is one body with her? For “the two,” He says, “shall become one flesh.” 17 But he who is joined to the Lord is one spirit with Him. 18 Flee sexual immorality. Every sin that a man does is outside the body, but he who commits sexual immorality sins against his own body. 19 Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own20 For you were bought at a price; therefore, glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s.

The bridegroom leaves the bride to go build a bridle chamber added on to his father’s house.

John 14:2-4 Jesus said, “In My Father’s house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also4 And where I go you know, and the way you know.”

It is not known how long or when the bridegroom will return. Possibly even in the middle of the night.

1 Thessalonians 5:2 For you yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so comes as a thief in the night.

Therefore, the bride must keep herself ready.

Matthew 25:1-13 “Then the kingdom of heaven shall be likened to ten virgins who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom. 2 Now five of them were wise, and five were foolish3 Those who were foolish took their lamps and took no oil with them, 4 but the wise took oil in their vessels with their lamps. 5 But while the bridegroom was delayedthey all slumbered and slept.

6 And at midnight a cry was heard: ‘Behold, the bridegroom is coming; go out to meet him!’ 7 Then all those virgins arose and trimmed their lamps. 8 And the foolish said to the wise, ‘Give us some of your oil, for our lamps are going out.’ 9 But the wise answered, saying, ‘No, lest there should not be enough for us and you; but go rather to those who sell, and buy for yourselves.’ 10 And while they went to buy, the bridegroom came, and those who were ready went in with him to the wedding; and the door was shut. 11 Afterward the other virgins came also, saying, ‘Lord, Lord, open to us!’ 12 But he answered and said, ‘Assuredly, I say to you, I do not know you.’ 13 Watch therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour in which the Son of Man is coming.”

The Wedding Feast

A great banquet is prepared for the bride, the groom, and all the guest who were invited to attend the celebration. It marks the consummation of the promise given. (John 14:2-3) The bride and the groom are together ‘till death do us part.’ There is no death in Heaven. We rule and rein with Him for eternity. (1 Corinthians 15:26) (Revelation 1:6;3:21;5:10;20:6)

Revelation 19:7-9 Let us be glad and rejoice and give Him glory, for the marriage of the Lamb has come, and His wife has made herself ready.” 8 And to her it was granted to be arrayed in fine linen, clean and bright, for the fine linen is the righteous acts of the saints. 9 Then the angel said to me, “Write: ‘Blessed are those who are called to the marriage supper of the Lamb!’” And he said to me, “These are the true sayings of God.”

Matthew 22:2-13 Jesus said, “The kingdom of heaven is like a certain king who arranged a marriage for his son, 3 and sent out his servants to call those who were invited to the wedding; and they were not willing to come4 Again, he sent out other servants, saying, ‘Tell those who are invited, “See, I have prepared my dinner; my oxen and fatted cattle are killed, and all things are ready. Come to the wedding.”’ 5 But they made light of it and went their ways, one to his own farm, another to his business6 And the rest seized his servants, treated them spitefully, and killed them. 7 But when the king heard about it, he was furious. And he sent out his armies, destroyed those murderers, and burned up their city. 8 Then he said to his servants, ‘The wedding is ready, but those who were invited were not worthy9 Therefore go into the highways, and as many as you find, invite to the wedding.’ 10 So those servants went out into the highways and gathered together all whom they found, both bad and good. And the wedding hall was filled with guests. 11 “But when the king came in to see the guests, he saw a man there who did not have on a wedding garment12 So he said to him, ‘Friend, how did you come in here without a wedding garment?’ And he was speechless. 13 Then the king said to the servants, ‘Bind him hand and foot, take him away, and cast him into outer darkness; there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’            Are you ready?

Revelation 22:17 And the Spirit and the bride say, “Come!” And let him who hears say, “Come!” And let him who thirsts come. Whoever desires, let him take the water of life freely.
