Servanthood

Being a servant in this day and age is considered degrading and insulting. And yet, Jesus has a whole different view of being subservient.

Matthew 20:25-28 Jesus said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and those who are great exercise authority over them. 26 Yet it shall not be so among you; but whoever desires to become great among you, let him be your servant27 And whoever desires to be first among you, let him be your slave— 28 just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.” (NKJ)

Our primary goal as a Christian is to serve the Lord. What does that look like? How can we serve Jesus who is seated at the right hand of the Father? By serving His Body – people.

Philippians 2:1-7 Therefore if there is any consolation in Christ, if any comfort of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any affection and mercy, 2 fulfill my joy by being like-minded, having the same love, being of one accord, of  one mind3 Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself. 4 Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others. 5 Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, 6 who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, 7 but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservantand coming in the likeness of men. (NKJ)

Bondservant = someone who chooses to belong to another; a bond-slave, without any ownership rights of their own. Ironically, “bond-slave” is used with the highest dignity in the NT – namely, of believers who willingly live under Christ’s authority as His devoted followers possessing nothing.

A ”bondservant” was a slave who was there willingly. One who wouldn’t leave even if given the chance. One who entrusted his owner to provide everything he needed.

Colossians 3:22-24 Bondservants, obey in all things your masters according to the flesh, not with eyeservice, as men-pleasers, but in sincerity of heart, fearing God. 23 And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men24 knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance; for you serve the Lord Christ. (NKJ)

Being a bondservant not only addresses how we act toward our Master, but also how we act toward our fellow servants.

1 Peter 4:8-10 And above all things have fervent love for one another, for “love will cover a multitude of sins.” 9 Be hospitable to one another without grumbling 10 As each one has received a gift, minister it to one another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.

Love causes us to tolerate others who don’t “measure-up.”

Romans 15:1-7 We then who are strong ought to bear with the scruples (infirmities) of the weak, and not to please ourselves2 Let each of us please his neighbor for his good, leading to edification. 3 For even Christ did not please Himself; but as it is written, “The reproaches of those who reproached You fell on Me.” 4 For whatever things were written before were written for our learning, that we through the patience and comfort of the Scriptures might have hope5 Now may the God of patience and comfort grant you to be like-minded toward one another, according to Christ Jesus6 that you may with one mind and one mouth glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. 7 Therefore receive one another, just as Christ also received us, to the glory of God. (NKJ) Infirmities = weakness of the mind; doubt.
How we act towards others reflects how we love the Father.

1 John 4:7-12 Beloved, let us love one another, for love is of God; and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. 8 He who does not love does not know God, for God is love9 In this the love of God was manifested toward us, that God has sent His only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through Him. 10 In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins. 11 Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. 12 No one has seen God at any time. If we love one another, God abides in us, and His love has been perfected in us. (NKJ)

John 13:12-17 So when Jesus had washed their feet, taken His garments, and sat down again, He said to them, “Do you know what I have done to you? 13 You call Me Teacher and Lord, and you say well, for so I am. 14 If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. 15 For I have given you an example, that you should do as I have done to you. 16 Most assuredly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master; nor is he who is sent greater than he who sent him. 17 If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them. (NKJ)
Servitude brings with it great rewards. That’s not why we do it, but you cannot out give God. The servant is not greater than the Master. How you treat others is how you treat God.

Matthew 25:37-40 “Then the righteous will answer Him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see You hungry and feed You, or thirsty and give You drink? 38 When did we see You a stranger and take You in, or naked and clothe You? 39 Or when did we see You sick, or in prison, and come to You?’ 40 And the King will answer and say to them, ‘Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these My brethren, you did it to Me.’ (NKJ)
