Who Is Affected by Sin?
Does sin affect God?
Romans 5:8-9 But God commends His love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. 9 Much more then, being now justified by His blood, we shall be saved from wrath through Him. (NKJ)
1 Thessalonians 1:10 And to wait for His Son from heaven, whom He raised from the dead, even Jesus, who delivered us from the wrath to come. (NKJ)
You cannot sin enough to change God’s love for you.
Romans 10:3-10 For they being ignorant of God’s righteousness, and going about to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted themselves unto the righteousness of God. 4 For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone that believes. 5 For Moses describes the righteousness which is of the law, That the man who does those things shall live by them. 6 But the righteousness which is of faith speaks thus, Say not in your heart, Who shall ascend into heaven? (that is, to bring Christ down from above:) 7 Or, Who shall descend into the deep? (that is, to bring up Christ again from the dead.) 8 But what says it? The word is near you, even in your mouth, and in your heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach; 9 That if you shall confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus, and shall believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you shall be saved. 10 For with the heart man believes unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. John 16:8-11 And when he (the Comforter*) is come, he will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: 9 Of sin, because they believe not on Me; 10 Of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and you see Me no more; 11 Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged. (NKJ) (*emphasis mine)
Sin does not affect God (other than the sin of rebellion in not receiving Jesus as your Savior), but it does affect you because there are consequences for your actions. Sin opens the door for the devil to have access in your life. We are not free to sin, but free from sin.
Romans 6:15-23 What does all this mean? Does it mean we are free to sin, because we are ruled by God’s gift of undeserved grace and not by the Law? Certainly not! 16 Don’t you know that you are slaves of anyone you obey? You can be slaves of sin and die, or you can be obedient slaves of God and be acceptable to Him. 17 You used to be slaves of sin. But I thank God that with all your heart you followed the example set forth in the teaching you received. 18 Now you are set free from sin and are slaves who please God. (Hebrews 11:6)
19 I am using these everyday examples, because in some ways you are still weak. You used to let the different parts of your body be slaves of your evil thoughts. But now you must make every part of your body serve God, so that you will belong completely to Him. 20 When you were slaves of sin, you were free (exempt*) from righteousness. 21 But what good did you receive from the things you did? All you have to show for them is your shame, and they lead to death. 22 Now you have been set free from sin, and you are God’s slaves. This will make you holy and will lead you to eternal life. 23 Sin pays off with death. But God’s gift is eternal life given by Jesus Christ our Lord. (CEV) (*Greek word for freed)
Sin causes you to pull away, separate yourself, or hide from God just as Adam did in the Garden.
Romans 8:1-2 There is therefore now no condemnation to them who are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. 2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death. (NKJ).0
Sin also affects our relationship with others.
1 Corinthians 6:7-11 Now therefore there is utterly a fault among you, because you go to law one with another. Why do you not rather take wrong? why do you not rather allow yourselves to be defrauded? 8 Nay, you do wrong, and defraud, and that your brethren. 9 Know you not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind, 10 Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God. 11 And such were some of you: but you are washed, but you are sanctified, but you are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God. (NKJ)
1 Corinthians 8:12 But when you sin so against the brethren, and wound their weak conscience, you sin against Christ. (NKJ)
Romans 14:21-23 It is good neither to eat meat, nor to drink wine, nor anything by which your brother stumbles, or is offended, or is made weak. 22 Have you faith? have it to yourself before God. Happy is he that condemns not himself in that thing which he allows. 23 And he that doubts is condemned if he eats, because he eats not of faith: for whatever is not of faith is sin.
