Abide

Abide in God’s Word. A primary verb; to stay (in a given place, state, relation or expectancy) — abide, continue, dwell, endure, be present, remain, stand, tarry.

John 8:31-35 Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, “If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed32 And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” 33 They answered Him, “We are Abraham’s descendants, and have never been in bondage to anyone. How can You say, ‘You will be made free’?” 34 Jesus answered them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, whoever commits sin is a slave of sin. 35 And a slave does not abide in the house forever, but a son abides forever. 36 Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed. (NKJ)

Every test, every trial, every problem you face was sent by the devil (not God) for the purpose of getting you to take your attention off God. When we focus on the problem, the only real answer to that problem (Jesus) becomes obscure. We must keep our hearts and minds focused on Him and His Word.

John 15:4-10 Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me. 5 “I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing6 If anyone does not abide in Me, he is cast out as a branch and is withered; and they gather them and throw them into the fire, and they are burned. 7 If you abide in Me, and My words abide in youyou will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you8 By this My Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit; so you will be My disciples. 9 “As the Father loved Me, I also have loved you; abide in My love10 If you keep My commandments, you will abide in My love, just as I have kept My Father’s commandments and abide in His love. (NKJ) 8

Whatever problem you face today is nothing more than a distraction sent to pull your attention off the Word.

2 John 1:9 Whoever transgresses and does not abide in the doctrine of Christ does not have God. He who abides in the doctrine of Christ has both the Father and the Son. (NKJ)

The word doctrine means applied teachings. Prescription, by definition, requires following the instructions. The Gos-pill must be applied as instructed otherwise you will not get the desired results.

Psalm 107:20 He sent His word and healed them,
And delivered them from their destructions. (NKJ)

No matter what Scripture you quote or prayer you pray it must be spoken in faith. (Example of a farmer who does not plant a seed but expects a crop.)

James 1:6-8 But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind. 7 For let not that man suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord8 he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways. (NKJ)

Faith, trust, resolve, and abide are all synonymous terms.

Hebrews 11:6 But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him. (NKJ)

Proverb 3:4-5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart,
and lean not on your own understanding; 6 In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths.

Psalm 17:3 You have tried my heart; You have visited me in the night. You have tested me and found no evil; I have resolved not to sin with my mouth. (Berean)

Psalm 91:1-2 He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.
2 I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress;
My God, in Him I will
trust.” (NKJ)

To abide carries with it the meaning of a place you stay – where you live. Not just a place you visit now and then but a place you inhabit – a dwelling place. It is a continuous state of being. A mindset. Your go-to place – a place of shelter when things get rough. A place of safety from the storms of life. A place of rest where you can remain at peace.

The word ‘habitation’ comes from the root word ‘habit.’ Habits can be good or bad. God Himself has a habit of listening to the praises we give Him.

Psalm 22:3 But thou art holy, O thou that inhabitest the praises of Israel. (KJV)

Psalm 71:1 In You, O LORD, I have taken refuge; let me never be put to shame. 2 Incline Your ear to me; come quickly to my rescue. Be my rock of refuge, the stronghold of my deliverance. 3 For You are my rock and my fortress; lead me and guide me for the sake of Your name.4 You free me from the net laid out for me, for You are my refuge. (Berean)

When the going gets rough and the pressure is on and you do not know what to do, what is your habit? Do you fall apart? Do you lean to your own understanding? Or do you stay at peace knowing and persuaded that He is your safety?
